Horace essays

-II. Essay: Choose one of the topics below –

-A. In Odes IX and XI, Horace uses poetry and poetic imagery to explain some aspects of his Epicurean philosophical outlook.  Discuss three points that both poems share, and explain what they tell us about Epicureanism (at least as Horace seems to understand it).

-B. Horace uses a number of vivid images to characterize Cleopatra throughout Ode XXXVII.  His characterization of Cleopatra changes, however, over the course of the poem.  Select several of these images and show how his depiction of her changes; what sort of person does he seem to think she is in the end?

-C. In his poetry Horace likes to tell stories through a series of images.  Describe the images he uses in Ode IX, how they form a narrative, and and how they relate to the theme of the poem.
